I think it’s great… August 28, 2014

That anime is getting more recognition internationally (I might be repeating myself here, but I just want to talk about it again if that’s the case). There will always be people that thinks anime is for kids only and I’ve given up on trying to discuss that with them. If they want to be narrow-minded, fine. I’m not the one missing out on all of the great shows out there. And while I do agree that last sentence sounds a little fanboy’ish, it’s only the truth. I can’t force people to watch anime, but I truly dislike that they are being judgemental of it without even having watched a whole show (anything other than Naruto or other shounen shows).

As there are a whole ton of different anime out there, you really need to watch a few to get a better grasp of it and realize that there are anime out there that are as equally good as the usual tv-shows you watch. There are phenomenal fantasy anime (Seirei no Moribito comes to mind), darker and grittier anime that relies on having more “mature themes” (no, violence and sex alone does not make an anime “mature”), philosophical anime that dares to ask the hard questions, more psychological anime that will mess with your mind and make you feel confused until you slowly start to piece the puzzle pieces together and a whole lot of different genres.

I will respect an opinion about anime if that person truly has tried it out and still don’t like it, that’s fine. We can’t all like the same things, after all. The thing with anime I find so fascinating is that there can, in theory, be a show about exactly anything. Anime is often an adaptation of a manga, light novels or something else. Those can only go as far as original content goes (with some creative freedom) and while some of my favorite anime of all time are based on a manga, there are plenty of original anime as well. Those original anime can be a huge breeze of fresh air in the business as they don’t have to restrict themselves.

I will confess that I used to be quite the fanboy and hating on people that “didn’t get it”, but as I have grown older, I realize things aren’t always so simple and that you have to respect people and their opinions (especially if they contradict yours). Instead of being an asshole, try to make them realize what’s so good about anime and why you like it. This is something the internet is infamous for for handling poorly. Trolls, fanboys, stubborn assholes, there are plenty of them all.

I don’t know what the point of this post is, but I just want to talk about anime as it’s my biggest hobby right now. When I’m finished with this post, I will go and finish re-watching Nichijou and probably finish up Baccano! as well.

I love anime for giving me interesting thoughts, filling my imagination with awesome scenarios and just letting me relax and disconnect from reality for a while. What are your thoughts? Do you like anime? Do you hate it? Please feel free to leave a comment and let’s talk about it!

Great post! I definitely agree with you. I long stopped trying to explain to people who don’t watch anime to watch them. Ultimately, it’s their own choice. Like you, it irks me to hear those narrow-minded ones who say that anime is for kids. But oh well. It’s up to them. I’ll just continue watching great series and focus on discussing them with people who understand how I feel, rather than feeling bothered by those who clearly don’t know what they’re talking about.

Thank you! Yeah, people who don’t “get” anime probably never will and it sure is their own fault. I kind of wish people in general would be more open-minded about most things, but that’s just me being naïve. Discussing anime with fellow fans sure is fun, but it can also be kind of frustrating when people just throw shit at each other for liking different things. Do you have any favorite anime in particular you would recommend? I am always looking for new things to check out. 🙂 Thanks for a great comment!

High-five! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
I don’t think you’re being naive by wishing others to be more open-minded. I think that a more appropriate term would be “optimistic”. I’m like that, as well. But we can’t force others to feel or think in the way we do.

Indeed, it’s fun to discuss our love for anime with fellow fans. And you’re right that it can be frustrating when people starts cat fights over differences in preference. When I sense that the other is starting to get defensive, I just leave the conversation. I don’t want to acquire more stress.

My favourites are ONE PIECE, HUNTERxHUNTER, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Bakuman, most sports anime, the classics, and many others. So basically, I like the variety and will watch anime from different genre. How about you?

graveworm666 - August 29, 2014

Haha, high five! Perhaps being optimistic is a better way to put it, yes. Precisely, forcing someone will never work.

I totally agree with you about cat fights. They never result in satisfying arguments/discussions and will only leave people angry. On the other side of that, discussing anime with other passionate fans that can discuss anime like a normal person, is awesome and very satisfying even if you like different things.

Nice! It seems we have a somewhat similar taste in anime. Some of my favorites would be Fullmetal Alchemist (both the original anime and Brotherhood), Death Note, Natsume Yuujinchou (I am currently watching the third season on Crunchyroll), Aria the Origination, Psycho-Pass and Aoi Bungaku.

There’s a lot of great anime out there and those are just a small pick of all of my favorites. In general I like sci-fi, relaxing slice of life, action, thought-provoking anime (Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei comes to mind), romance (with the right amount of drama), fantasy and comedy. I like most genres as long as they are well-made.

Lately, I have been interesting in watching more sport-oriented anime, but I don’t know where to start. I’m thinking about watching Kuroko no Basket and perhaps some older classics, we’ll see.

arriacross - August 30, 2014

Indeed. It seems that we have similar tastes. I’m willing to try any show. I don’t discriminate. One of my purposes in life is discovering the greatest stories in the world, and anime is a great source of awesome stories.

I love sports anime, especially if it showcases the growth of the character. I like Hajime no Ippo. Major is also a good one (it’s epic!). I can spout of a long list for you, but I don’t want to overwhelm you. You can start with Kuroko no Basket. It’s up to you. Cheers!

graveworm666 - August 30, 2014

That’s a great mindset to have. Hajime no Ippo is something that I’ve been wanting to see for years, but never have. Major is another show I’ve heard great things about, so I need to get on that. I’ll graduate in a month which will lead to a lot of free time. I will probably watch a lot of anime then and those two are definitely on the list.

I won’t get overwhelmed, haha! I wouldn’t mind at all if you were to give me a long list. You absolutely don’t have to, though. 🙂 I love widening my horizon/taste too so it’s all good. I have over 300 anime on my “plan to watch”-list over at MAL, so I don’t think I will run out of anime to watch anytime soon, haha.

Do you use MAL (Myanimelist) or something similar to keep track of all your anime watching?

arriacross - September 2, 2014

That’s great. I have a similar long list, as well. No, I don’t have an online anime/manga tracker. I had a MAL profile before, but eventually realized that I much prefer creating a manual list on my computer. Sometimes, I write them on notebooks.

Yes, you should definitely try Hajime no Ippo and Major. They’re both on my favourites list. Of course, they have flaws and tropes you frequently see in sports anime/manga (or any shounen series) but overall, both of them are awesome.

Best of luck. Have fun tackling your 300 anime shows list. Keep on watching anime and keep on blogging.

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both equally educative and interesting, and let me tell you,
you’ve hit the nail on the head. The issue is an issue that not enough
folks are speaking intelligently about. Now i’m very happy I found this in my hunt for something concerning this.

graveworm666 - August 30, 2014

Aww, you’re gonna make me blush! Thank you very much for the kind comment. I am glad you think that about my blog. When it comes to the topic of anime, people tend to dive into the extremes and nothing productive can come out of that. Here’s to hoping my blog will continue to stay interesting!
